On The Rock
AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

This has been a crazy weather day. The wind is fierce and I am amazed that our house is still standing! Wind always makes me feel lonely; even with everyone around. When storms come, it can bring such uncertainty. How long will it last? Will anything be destroyed? Will we lose power? In times like this I am thankful that I live on The Rock (Newfoundland), and for a home that is built on a sturdy foundation. So far today, we have not blown out into The Narrows!
Storms in our personal lives bring so much uncertainty as well. Normally those storms creep upon us unaware. Many times our emotions are not prepared for those stormy moments that affect us. The storm that our family entered into last fall was one that we did not expect. From Mom’s cancer diagnosis, to her surgery, to her hospitalization, and eventually to her passing, each day of this journey was filled with uncertainty. There were some highs throughout those weeks, but eventually those highs gave way to lows that we never thought we would ever experience. We took the greatest storm in our life one day at a time. Jesus helped us through each day, and is still our Help and Guide as we continue on in our journey.
In the Bible, Jesus shared a parable comparing two different ways that people can experience storms in their lives. In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus referred to two men: one built his home on the solid rock, and the other built his home on the sand. The rains came, the floods came, and the winds blew for both of those men. The house built on the rock did not fall, but the house built on the sand fell, “and great was its fall” (verse 27). It is so important to build our lives on the Rock (Jesus Christ). He explained to us how to build on the solid rock in verse 24: “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them…” Jesus is our Rock in stormy times. When we hear His words and obey Him, we will be able to withstand any storm that we go through by His grace and mercy.
We were never guaranteed a life without storms. We will go through some difficulties and trials in our lives, and we may even feel the effects of those rains and winds. But, when we place our lives and trust in the Lord, we will not fall. He will hold us and be our strong foundation. He will see us through.
We know that we would have never been able to go through this journey if the Lord had not been our foundation. He has provided stability to our lives in a situation that was anything but stable. Have you gone through storms that have left you broken and shattered? Are you currently facing trials and uncertainty? Is your life built upon Jesus? If not, turn to Him. You will not fall when your life is built on The Rock.
